Plugs for Lambda sensorsWhat is the task of the plug?
The plug joins the connecting cables of the Lambda sensor with those of the engine electronics. A plug connection in original execution is therefore important, so that the signal from the Lambda sensor is transmitted unhindered to the engine control unit. The design of a Lambda sensor with sensor element and heating element:
These differing requirements must be taken care of by the contact elements of the plug. For good reliability these are often surface-gold-plated on the contact faces, and tinned on the cable terminal ends. The contact elements must be corrosion resistant and reliably conduct the various electric currents.
Another important factor is the proper connection of the contact element of the plug with the cable of the Lambda sensor.
This is done by so called "crimping", to process a lasting connection between contact element and cable by compressing these parts using a special tool. Here, the "crimp height" is of decisive importance for the firm seating of the cable and for good electric conductivity.
A good seal against water, and protection against loosening of the plug contacts, and breaking of the plug connection is provided by the plug shell. For this housing a thermoplastic is used which partially contains glass fibre for increased strength. Good mechanical and electrical properties, resistance against chemicals, against ageing, and high temperatures are the properties required for this application.
Why use an original plug?
This important mix of differing features can be secured only by a plug of the original plug manufacturer, who has tuned his products to the requirements of the Lambda sensor and its installation position.
The use of original plugs has, compared with the use of provisional cable connections, or the use of the "old plug", when exchanging the Lambda sensor the following advantages:
