Lambda sensors for optimal exhaust gas reductionThe Automobile manufacturers are obliged by the stipulated exhaust gas regulations to reduce exhaust gas emissions. Today therefore, all vehicles with Otto engines are equipped in series with a three-way catalytic converter.
The catalytic converter converts the harmful exhaust gases into gases which are friendly to the environment. In order that the catalytic converter works effectively the ratio of fuel and air must be accurately balanced. The Lambda sensor determines continuously the composition of the exhaust gases.
Exhaust gas system in front of the catalytic converter. It measures the residue oxygen content in the exhaust gas.
By means of an output signal it controls the engine unit, which adjusts accurately the fuel-air mixture through the mixture controller. This so-called closed-loop control guarantees an optimised mixture ratio. At the same time it sets not only the optimum conversion rate of the catalytic converter but also the optimum in driving performance.
